Judge: NYC Taxis Can't Be Forced to Go Green

A Prius Could Go 3 Times As Far on a Gallon as the Traditional Crown Vic Taxi

From The Daily Green:

"A judge has sided with New York City taxi owners, and against Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in ruling that taxis can't be forced to better their fuel economy. The judge issued an injunction blocking the rule from taking effect; it would have forced most taxis to use hybrid gas-electric engines by 2012, and was designed to improve air quality.

While many drivers saw the benefits of driving hybrids -- particularly in stop-and-go city traffic, where the friction of breaking enhances the overall fuel economy of vehicles -- fleet owners and others in the industry opposed the mandate. Read the entire article here...

Cow Burps Contribute to Global Warming

Greenhouse gases produced by cow burps are growing at a faster rate than the man-made emissions responsible for global warming, according to the latest research.

From telegraph:

"Various studies have looked at the affect carbon dioxide produced by humans is having on climate change. But new research has found cows are just as bad by producing methane, a greenhouse gas with a longer lifetime in the atmosphere and therefore higher global warming potential. 10 Cheap Ways to be an Organic Mom

Green Strategies For All Parents, Even Pregnant Teens

From The Daily Green:

"I've been told over and over again - wrongly, I feel - that being an organic mom is only for the elite. I counteract this claim constantly, and have written here about being a frugal organic mom. The current economic situation has certainly meant I've been thinking more and more about living eco-cheaply. Still, for the most part, the audiences I've been speaking to lately haven't been requesting information on how to go green and save green at the same time. Read the entire article here...

Special Report: How Our Economy is Killing the Earth

THE graphs climbing across these pages (see graph, right, or explore in more detail) are a stark reminder of the crisis facing our planet.

From New Scientist:

"Consumption of resources is rising rapidly, biodiversity is plummeting and just about every measure shows humans affecting Earth on a vast scale. Most of us accept the need for a more sustainable way to live, by reducing carbon emissions, developing renewable technology and increasing energy efficiency.

But are these efforts to save the planet doomed? A growing band of experts are looking at figures like these and arguing that personal carbon virtue and collective environmentalism are futile as long as our economic system is built on the assumption of growth. The science tells us that if we are serious about saving Earth, we must reshape our economy. Read the entire article here...

Exposing the Bi-Partisan Myth of Clean Coal

There’s at least one topic the candidates in the US elections won’t be wrangling over: so-called “clean” coal. That’s because they all support it.

From Matadorchange:

"Since 2000, McCain has accepted nearly three times the donations from the coal industry as Obama and Biden combined ($51,850 for McCain versus $17,100 and $3,000 for Obama and Biden, respectively).

And yet even as Obama raises the progressive voice on a number of issues, he has proclaimed the virtues of “clean” coal as widely and vociferously as McCain. Read the entire article here...

Mexican Marijuana Cartels Sully US Forests, Parks

National forests and parks — long popular with Mexican marijuana-growing cartels — have become home to some of the most polluted pockets of wilderness in America because of the toxic chemicals needed to eke lucrative harvests from rocky mountainsides, federal officials said.

From Yahoo:

"The grow sites have taken hold from the West Coast's Cascade Mountains, as well as on federal lands in Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. Read the entire article here...

Aussie Sheep Wear Gas Masks

It sounds like a woolly idea, but Australian sheep are to be fitted with gas masks to find out how much they are affecting the climate.

From DailyMail:

Researchers will fit the masks over the sheep for a short time to obtain a reading from their breath so it can be established how much methane gas they are emitting. Read the entire article here...

Global Warming: Beyond the Tipping Point

The world's most outspoken climatologist argues that today's carbon dioxide levels are already dangerously too high. What can we do if he is right?

From Sciam:

"The basic proposition behind the science of climate change is so firmly rooted in the laws of physics that no reasonable person can dispute it. All other things being equal, adding carbon dioxide (CO2) to the atmosphere—by, for example, burning millions of tons of oil, coal and natural gas—will make it warm up. That, as the Nobel Prize–winning chemist Svante Arrhenius first explained in 1896, is because CO2 is relatively transparent to visible light from the sun, which heats the planet during the day. But it is relatively opaque to infrared, which the earth tries to reradiate back into space at night. If the planet were a featureless, monochromatic billiard ball without mountains, oceans, vegetation and polar ice caps, a steadily rising concentration of CO2 would mean a steadily warming earth. Period. Read the entire article here...

Hurricane Ike Spilled 12,000 Barrels of Oil

Is Offshore Oil Worth the Risk?

From The Daily Green:

"At least 500,000 gallons of oil — nearly 12,000 barrels — spilled into the ocean and tidal wetlands along the Texas and Louisiana coasts after Hurricane Ike ripped up oil platforms, and ruptured tanks and pipelines, according to an Associated Press investigation. That's about 5% of the oil spilled due to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Read the entire article here...
